The Juvenile Justice Advisory Group, through the Maine Department of Corrections, supports programs for the improvement of juvenile justice and delinquency prevention. JJAG awarded BOT funding to support the Skills for Responsible Thinking program in York and Cumberland counties for FY 2005-06 under the Alternatives to Detention program. During FY 2006-07 JJAG graciously awarded BOT a second year of funding for this same program. “This initiative seeks to eliminate the inappropriate or unnecessary use of secure detention by increasing the number of alternatives and enhancing the effectiveness of already existing alternatives to secure detention, so that youth are not securely detained for a lack of viable options.” The goal of the Alternatives to Detention program is to provide “appropriate comprehensive services for all youth who are at risk to become or who are involved in Maine’s juvenile justice system.”

- We were thankful to also be given a second grant award for School Year 2006-07 to provide the Skills for Responsible Thinking program in the Gorham High School as an alternative to suspension and expulsion. Under the guidelines for this grant program “The goal must be to retain students in school where they can be offered programs designed to promote academic success and restore the damage done by the inappropriate behavior.” The ultimate goal is “to reduce the incidence of "suspensions" and "expulsions."”
- Back on Track has recently worked with over 30 students and the school staff at Gorham High School under this grant project.
- Back on Track received the Time Warner Cares grant consisting of production and airing of a public service announcement and $1000 in cash support. View the PSA.
- Back on Track was awarded a matching grant from Wal-mart in 2006.
Contributors
- Flatbread Company in Portland has accommodated our yearly request to hold a Tuesday night fundraiser at their establishment. In 2006 Back on Track took in almost $3000 in donations from efforts related to this fundraiser. Flatbread Company contributed nearly $600. In addition, Flatbread Company has generously donated food for our student graduation classes.
- During the past year-and-a-half Back on Track has benefited from weekly donations of food from Panera Bakery in South Portland and Westbrook. This donation has helped to offset the cost of feed we provide to students during the classes.
